Student Spotlight: Cosmetology Student, Anna Novikova

Leyden-NovikovaEastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) Cosmetology/Cheltenham High School senior, Anna Novikova, is getting a head start on her career as a cosmetologist while still in high school. Anna is already well-versed in all areas of cosmetology, and will continue the program throughout part of the summer to earn the 1,250 classroom hours required to take her Pennsylvania State Board of Cosmetology exam this summer.

Anna’s older brother graduated from EASTERN’s Collision Repair Technology program in 2015, and because of his participation in an EASTERN program, Anna was already aware of the career preparation programs offered at EASTERN. In 10th grade she attended an EASTERN informational assembly held at Cheltenham High School, and decided that Cosmetology might be the best fit for her. She spoke to her parents and found them to be extremely supportive of her decision, and were thrilled at the prospect of saving salon costs in the future. Her parents, brother and friends were more than willing to let Anna practice different haircuts and styles on them.

Initially she thought taking the Cosmetology program at EASTERN would be fun, but did not see it as a long-term career goal. As the course progressed she realized that there are many interesting facets of the field as well as the opportunity to be your own boss. She developed a true commitment to the program, and is now a leader in her class. She excels in hair chemical services such as color and highlights.

“When I first entered the program, I didn’t expect it to be so serious,” said Anna. “In order to earn the 1,250 hours of class time necessary for the PA State Board Exam, Cosmetology students attend EASTERN half-day during their junior and senior years, and also for several weeks each summer. This program encompasses biology, chemistry and math – all of which is related specifically to the cosmetology field.”

After graduation from EASTERN and Cheltenham High School, Anna plans to attend Bucks County Community College for Business while working part time at a salon to build upon her experience. She hopes to someday open her own salon.
