EASTERN Welding Technology Student Already Receiving Union Job Offers for Full-Time Jobs After High School Graduation
Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN)/ Abington Senior High School senior, Luis Ramos McMahon, has already received several job offers in the skilled trades from Philadelphia-based unions. All three jobs offer full benefits and competitive wages.
At the end of November, Abington Senior High School held a career fair, where Luis met representatives from three unions: Philadelphia Plumbers Local 690, Sheet Metal Workers Local 19, and Ironworkers Local Union 401. Plumbers Local 690 are contracted in many different construction applications. They work in the heavy industrial, commercial, and residential sectors of the construction industry. Sheet Metal Workers Local 19 provides high-quality craftsmen for the residential, commercial, and industrial sheet metal industries. Ironworkers Local Union 401 is a chapter of the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental, and Reinforcing Ironworkers. Ironworkers Local 401 is affiliated with the AFL-CIO and the Philadelphia Building and Construction Trades Council. Members of Ironworkers Local 401 are highly skilled craftsmen serving the many types of contractors in the Union Ironworking Industry.
Luis has received offers from two of the three organizations and will need to make his final decision by May. Since the 18th century, American employees have found support, protection, and guidance from unions. There are a variety of union types that make industry, wage, and workplace changes.
“Unions are a great choice because it guarantees that the company who is contracting them gets a skilled employee,” said Luis. “Starting at EASTERN to learn to weld was a great decision for me. My Welding Technology Instructor, Mrs. Cicchino, has given me the confidence to branch out and continue to learn and enhance my skills. I am excited about my future, and I owe so much of that to my education at EASTERN.”
