National Hispanic Heritage Month Student Spotlight: Estrella Acevedo, Protective Services

Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) is excited to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month by recognizing the achievements and contributions of Hispanic American students who have inspired others and achieved great success in their programs. This week, we are pleased to feature Protective Services and Hatboro-Horsham Senior High School junior, Estrella Acevedo.

Estrella’s parents were both born in Veracruz, Mexico.  Her grandparents immigrated to the U.S. when Estrella’s mother was a young teenager.  They worked hard to establish themselves and provide a good life for their daughter. Estrella is extremely proud of her Mexican heritage and spent some time with family in Mexico this summer.  “In Mexico, I have found that life is simpler.  No one worries about who has the newest phone.  Just having family around is what makes everyone happy,” said Estrella.  “To me, my culture feels like home – my safe place.”

Estrella credits her Mexican culture for making her the strong and independent person she is today. “In Mexican culture, you are taught to be true to yourself and work hard to achieve your goals,” said Estrella. “There are always going to be people who don’t want to see you succeed.  I always remind myself to do what makes me happy, and not worry about the judgment of others.”

Estrella has a strong support system through her family.  She appreciates the constant support from her stepfather, who always encourages her to be herself and to work hard for her dreams and aspirations – regardless of how different they may be from other girls her age.  “He supported me when I chose to join the wrestling team, while pursuing boxing, and even allows me to help out on some construction jobs,” said Estrella. “He believes I can do anything I set my mind to and allows me to make mistakes to learn from.”

Estrella’s advice to a tenth grader thinking about pursuing Protective Services at EASTERN is – “Do it. You miss one hundred percent of the shots you don’t take in life,” said Estrella.  “Do what makes you happy.”

Estrella recently found out through her Protective Services Instructor, Mr. Dan Schaffer, that she can pursue careers in all three areas of interest - EMT, Firefighter, and Police Officer.  “I don’t want to focus on just one,” said Estrella.    “I feel like the more I can help people, the happier I will be.”
