Lincoln Benner, a senior at Upper Moreland High School and Welding Technology student at the Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN), took first place at the American Welding Society and Millwrights Local 219 Welding Contest on March 12, 2025. The competition was held at the Eastern Atlantic States Carpenters Technical Center in Philadelphia. As the top winner, Lincoln received a brand-new welder.

The contest was open to students currently enrolled in welding programs throughout the greater Philadelphia area. Each competitor was selected by their Welding Technology Instructor to represent their school. The event began in the classroom, where students received program instructions and blueprints outlining their projects. Then, they headed into the shop to get to work. Each participant was tasked with completing three different welding projects: stick welding, MIG welding, and flux core welding. “Mrs. Cicchino asked me about it, and I jumped at the chance to demonstrate my skills,” said Lincoln.

Lincoln’s father works in construction, which helped instill in him an appreciation for the skilled trades. Confident that a hands-on path was the right fit for him, Lincoln chose to pursue work that aligns with his strengths and interests. He credits his high school, Upper Moreland, for introducing him to EASTERN’s programs. “Welding aligns with my values and career goals, and I was fortunate to be accepted,” Lincoln said.

Lincoln is especially excited about the opportunity to weld outdoors during the summer months, embracing the hands-on work he truly enjoys. He has already taken the next step by applying to the steamfitters’ union and is eager to launch his career doing what he loves.

“One piece of advice: if you put in the time and dedication, you’ll master a craft that 99 percent of people will never be able to touch—and that’s something truly remarkable,” Lincoln said.
