EASTERN Welding Technology Student Volunteers Skills to Repair Cart for Abington Senior High School’s STRIVE Program

Neva Fullmer, a Welding Technology student at the Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) and a senior at Hatboro-Horsham High School, learned from Meghan Cicchino, EASTERN’s Welding Technology instructor about a project to repair a cart used by the STRIVE students at Abington Senior High School. STRIVE stands for Students Transitioning in Recreation, Independence, and Vocational Employment.  STRIVE serves young adults with complex needs aged 18-21 in the areas of vocation, functional academics, and independent living skills. These students go out to work in various job sites around Abington Senior High School’s building daily to practice vocational skills.

Last year, STRIVE launched an on-site laundry service in partnership with the health suite, family and consumer science, ceramics, and physical education departments. Each day, STRIVE students collect laundry from these locations and take it to Abington’s industrial-sized washer and dryer. After drying, the students fold the laundry and deliver it back to the respective areas throughout the building.

“Our current cart was donated to the program last year, but unfortunately, it’s not holding up well," said Caitlin Pringle, STRIVE Transition Teacher at Abington Senior High School. "The wheels are small and often get stuck at the elevator entrance, causing some to pop off. We've tried fixing it with duct tape and glue, but larger wheels would be ideal. There are also some structural weaknesses that might benefit from welding. We love this cart because many of my students are nearly 6 feet tall, and its height helps them avoid bending over while pushing it.”

Neva is a student ambassador at EASTERN, consistently eager to represent her program and speak to prospective students. At Hatboro-Horsham High School, she is a cheerleader, a member of the Link Crew, where she helps 9th graders adjust to high school, and serves as President of the Fellowship of Christian Students. "Helping others isn't just something Neva does; it's at the core of who she is," said Meghan Cicchino, EASTERN Instructor. “Neva’s energy and passion for lifting others up set her apart as a true role model. Her commitment to service, leadership, and community makes her an inspiring figure both inside and outside the classroom.”

Neva is taking on the challenge of revamping the cart for the STRIVE program, putting her welding expertise to work. She’s reinforcing the structure to make it more durable and reliable. Neva is also researching and sourcing bigger, sturdier wheels to ensure the cart can handle heavier loads and roll smoothly during sales. Her hands-on approach and attention to detail are transforming the cart into a functional, long-lasting tool that will better serve the STRIVE students. This project highlights Neva's creativity, problem-solving skills, and dedication to making a real impact.
