Kassidy Hessian, a junior at Abington Senior High School, is enrolled in the Exercise Science and Rehabilitation program at the Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN). Passionate about physical fitness and staying active, Kassidy pursues a variety of activities to maintain her health. Most uniquely, she channels her love for fitness as a member of a roller derby team, The Philly Juniors Brawl Stars, where she holds a blocker position. The Philly Junior Brawl Stars are part of the Philly Roller Derby Juniors program, a co-ed and open-gender league for kids aged 6-18.
Before joining roller derby, Kassidy played field hockey. One day, she and her mom were chatting about the movie Whip It, and her mom mentioned that roller derby might be a perfect fit for her. Inspired by the idea, Kassidy decided to give the sport a try.
Kassidy has been dedicated to her roller derby team for four years. As a freshman, she sustained a concussion that required several weeks of physical therapy. Through her recovery, she developed a deep interest in physical therapy and felt inspired to help others facing similar sports-related injuries. Learning about EASTERN’s Exercise Science and Rehabilitation program, Kassidy recognized it as an ideal foundation to start her journey toward a career in physical therapy, combining her love for sports with a passion for supporting injured athletes.
Kassidy loves many aspects of her program, especially the camaraderie with her classmates and the guidance of her instructor, Mrs. Shelley Helm. The program is giving her a strong foundation in injury treatment and boosting her confidence in her ability to help others. “When I see someone injured on the sideline, I feel a strong urge to step in and help,” Kassidy shared.
After graduating from EASTERN and Abington, Kassidy hopes to attend Syracuse University or the University of Pittsburgh, where she plans to pursue a Physical Therapy program and continue to play roller derby.
Kassidy’s mom has always encouraged her to be herself and follow her passions. “My mom inspires me,” said Kassidy. “I credit her with getting me into roller derby, and she always tells me to be true to myself and do my own thing. She’s like that too—a great role model.”
