EASTERN Student Spotlight: Juliana Stigliano, Welding Technology

Juliana Stigliano, a senior at Upper Moreland High School, is thriving in her second year of the Welding Technology program at the Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN). Selected for this student spotlight, Juliana exemplifies a positive can-do attitude and serves as an inspiring role model for women in the skilled trades. Her experiences at EASTERN have helped her solidify her career aspirations in a hands-on, high-demand field.

During her 10th-grade visit to EASTERN, Juliana explored programs like Cosmetology, Automotive Technology, and Welding Technology. The turning point came when instructor instructor let her step into a welding booth and try it herself. “I was so excited that I went straight back to my Upper Moreland school counselor to say I wanted to enroll,” Juliana recalled.

That enthusiasm led to even more opportunities. In summer 2025, Juliana was interviewed and hired as a paid intern by EASTERN’s administrative team. She worked alongside the Electrical Technology instructor and Facilities Manager on building upgrades and maintenance. “I love learning new things and want to know a little bit of everything,” she said. “I enjoyed coming to work every day!”

Juliana particularly appreciates the precision and focus required in welding. “When you’re in the booth with your gear and helmet on, it’s truly independent work,” she explained. “You can tune out distractions and concentrate fully on your craft.”

Juliana has always been an active, outdoorsy person who thrives on challenges and hands-on experiences and did not grow up drawn to the many interests traditionally associated with girls. While many of her friends preferred playing with dolls, she spent her time playing with cars or being outside exploring new places. She has no interest in sitting at a desk or spending her days in a traditional classroom setting. With a determined, challenge-based attitude, Juliana rises to the occasion whenever someone tells her she cannot do something—proving them wrong with outstanding success. She takes pride in defying stereotypes, doing her own thing, and forging her own path in a male-dominated trade. This drive has fueled her passion for welding, a field where skill, precision, and perseverance pay off.

Her biggest inspiration? Her mother. “She always told me that trying your best is all that matters,” Juliana shared. “She was thrilled when I chose Welding Technology and supported me fully. She loves seeing my projects, especially when I welded her a lily pad, a present box, and a Christmas tree made from nuts and bolts!”

After graduating from EASTERN and Upper Moreland High School, Juliana plans to join a union apprenticeship to expand her skills and knowledge further.
