Avery Cleary, a senior at Springfield Township High School and a second-year student in the Protective Services program at the Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN), is passionate about helping others both in and out of school. In preparation for joining the Coast Guard after graduation, Avery has been volunteering with the Community Ambulance Association of Ambler (CAAA) for the past six months.
CAAA, established in 1941, responds to 9-1-1 dispatched calls for emergency medical care in Ambler Borough, Lower Gwynedd Township, Springfield Township, and parts of Upper Dublin Township. Avery developed an interest in becoming an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) through her stepfather and has enjoyed participating in ride-a-longs with paramedics and EMTs. "Volunteering for such an incredible organization and collaborating with such dedicated professionals has been an amazing experience. Seeing how these experts care for their patients has been truly inspiring," said Avery.
At Springfield Township High School, Avery is part of the First Responders Club. The First Responders Club introduces students to exciting and rewarding careers in emergency services, such as paramedics, firefighters, and law enforcement officers. Club members explore various aspects of these professions through guest speakers, field trips, and hands-on activities. As a new member, Avery is looking forward to the Plymouth Community Ambulance Association's annual Operation Christmas Kids Toy Run next week, where the club will drop off collected toys to a Philadelphia-based hospital and a local hospital. The Flourtown, Oreland, and Wyndmoor Fire Companies will be assisting the club by driving the toys to the hospitals in their fire trucks.
Avery discovered that EASTERN's Protective Services program aligns perfectly with her career aspirations. Inspired by her grandfather's service in the Air Force, Avery always envisioned a future in the military. As an avid swimmer, she chose the Coast Guard, where she plans to specialize in Maritime Law Enforcement. After completing her military service, she intends to become EMT certified and pursue a career in law enforcement.
Avery draws inspiration from her family, with her mother serving as her greatest motivator. “My mom encourages me to pursue my dreams and discover something I’m truly passionate about,” said Avery. “I am incredibly grateful for her unwavering support and encouragement.”
