John McCarty, Jr., a 2001 graduate of Upper Moreland High School and the Electrical Technology program at the Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN), currently serves as Vice President and Business Agent for the Laborers Local 332. In this role, McCarty advocates for fair working conditions, long-term job stability, and secure employment for the union's members.
McCarty became interested in Electrical Technology at EASTERN because it was a construction trade he was less familiar with, sparking his curiosity. While family members had taught him about plumbing and carpentry, the hands-on nature of electrical work intrigued him. He enjoyed learning how electricity functions, as well as skills like bending pipes and running wires.
“What I liked most about the Electrical Technology program at EASTERN was the freedom to learn independently,” said McCarty. “Unlike in an English or Math class, once you received a task, it was hands-on. I could learn from my peers and industry professionals, and then apply that knowledge directly to my projects.”
At EASTERN, McCarty learned that if you didn't attend class, you received a "0" for the day, reflecting the real-world consequences of missing work in the construction field, where not showing up can result in losing your job and pay. EASTERN emphasized the importance of strong work ethics essential in construction. Thanks to his experiences there, McCarty gained a better understanding of materials and trade terminology.
"After graduating from EASTERN, I worked as a seasonal helper for Local 98 (Electricians Union)," said McCarty. "Although I wasn’t able to get into their apprenticeship program, I joined Laborers Local 332, starting as a field worker. Now, 23 years later, I’m still with Local 332 and currently serve as Vice President/Business Agent. I earn a competitive salary, with a pension and annuity that secure my long-term future. I've also been able to provide my family with some of the best healthcare coverage in the industry. If traditional school isn’t for you, EASTERN can still introduce you to other opportunities, even if it's not the exact trade you initially wanted. You can build a hands-on career outside of the typical office setting."
