February is Black History Month, and the Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) is proud to honor this important occasion by celebrating exceptional students through student voice and recognition. This week’s student showcase proudly features Kayla Ervin, a senior from Cheltenham High School enrolled in EASTERN’s Business and Technology Professional program. Kayla was nominated for this student spotlight by EASTERN’s Executive Director, Dr. Cathleen Plesnarski, in recognition of her outstanding dedication, professionalism, and drive.

When Kayla thinks about Black History Month, she sees it as a time to actively uplift and support her community. She does this by showing up—attending Black History Month events and parades and giving back through volunteer work. As a proud member of Cheltenham High School’s Black Student Union, Kayla helps organize bake sales, prepare care bags for local shelters, and collect clothing and canned goods for those in need.

Throughout her time at EASTERN, Kayla has been selected for several special projects, including participating in the TruMark Financial Workshop Series. She also served as a student speaker at EASTERN’s 10th Grade Career Expo held at Cheltenham High School. On January 28, 2026, Kayla earned a bronze medal as Vice President of the Opening and Closing Ceremony Team at the SkillsUSA District 2 Competition. In addition, she serves as the SkillsUSA Class Representative for the AM session of the Business and Technology Professional program, where she reports fundraiser sales to the student committee and communicates important information back to her class.

At Cheltenham High School, Kayla demonstrates leadership both inside and outside the classroom. She serves as captain of the high school dance team and is an active participant in the Black Student Union, Black Scholars Program, and a member of the Computer Science Honor Society, while also contributing to the Yearbook Club. Beyond school, Kayla volunteers at local voting booths, further exemplifying her commitment to community.

Kayla chose the Business and Technology Professional program at EASTERN because of its flexibility and the transferable skills that apply across any career field. She especially values earning industry-standard certifications in Microsoft Word and Excel. “Everything I’m learning will support my future as I continue my education in Architecture and Interior Design,” Kayla said.

Kayla draws her greatest inspiration from her mother. “She was a single mother raising my sister and me while juggling so many responsibilities,” Kayla said. “She always stayed strong for us and pushed me to do my best. She reminds us that a parent always wants better for their child than they had for themselves.” Kayla’s mother works in the finance department at Thomas Jefferson University, and Kayla believes that is where her passion and aptitude for business began.

After graduation from Cheltenham High School and EASTERN, Kayla plans to attend college for Architecture and Interior Design, She is currently narrowing down her choices, with Thomas Jefferson University currently at the top of her list.
