February is Black History Month, and the Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) is proud to honor this important occasion by celebrating exceptional students through student voice and recognition. This week’s student showcase proudly features Giovanni Francis, a junior from Cheltenham High School enrolled in EASTERN’s Automotive Technology program. Giovanni was nominated for this student spotlight by EASTERN’s Executive Director, Dr. Cathleen Plesnarski, in recognition of his outgoing personality, professionalism, and outstanding dedication to learning.

To Giovanni, Black History Month represents history deeply ingrained in Black culture. “I think about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and all the individuals who shaped the lives of Black people and continue to influence our world today,” Giovanni said. “Without their sacrifices and leadership, we could be living in a very different reality.”

At Cheltenham High School, Giovanni is an active member of the Black Student Union, which organizes fundraisers, creates art displayed throughout the school, and engages in meaningful discussions about Black history and culture. He is also a driven student-athlete who plays soccer and runs track.

As a first-year student at EASTERN, Giovanni has already established himself as a leader in the classroom and a strong competitor in SkillsUSA, EASTERN’s student leadership organization. On January 28, 2026, he earned the top score in the SkillsUSA District 2 Job Interview competition, securing his place at the State competition. In addition, he serves as a SkillsUSA representative for the AM session Automotive Technology program, where he attends meetings and communicates essential information back to his class.

Growing up, Giovanni took several trips to Jamaica to visit his father's side of the family, where cars are a major part of everyday life. The island has a vibrant street-racing and motorsports culture, with drag racing, circuit racing, and car shows drawing widespread interest. “I grew up around cars,” Giovanni said. “My dad is a big car guy, and we are rebuilding a race car together now. The Automotive Technology program at EASTERN is really helping me with the rebuild. We were having an issue with the brake booster, but now I know how to properly test it. I can already see my education at EASTERN paying off in the real world.” Giovanni credits his Automotive Technology instructor, Mr. Will Soleau, for keeping him motivated and always pointing out the things he does well, which has helped him build both skills and confidence.

Giovanni draws inspiration from his tight-knit family, past and present. He fondly remembers his Uncle Val and grandfather, who have passed away but were always sources of guidance and support. “I try to stay focused for them,” Giovanni said. “That’s what they would want.” He also looks to his parents, both of whom he called immediately after his first place win at the SkillsUSA District Competition. “They were so happy for me and proud,” he said. “My mom has always helped me with advice and guidance.” And he wouldn’t be the person he is today without his little sister. “For Christmas, she gave me a ‘#1 Brother’ trophy that I keep on a shelf in my room,” Giovanni shared.

After graduating from EASTERN and Cheltenham High School, Giovanni plans to attend North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University to study Computer Engineering. “With my experiences at EASTERN and in college, I’m confident I’ll find a job and be successful,” he said.
