Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Student Spotlight: Justin Kim, Protective Services

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. At EASTERN, we are celebrating by highlighting outstanding students of Asian heritage who demonstrate leadership and excellence in their programs. Today, we spotlight Justin Kim, a student in EASTERN’s Protective Services program and a senior at Cheltenham High School.

When Justin reflects on Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, he thinks about the many ways his culture has shaped American society — from food and fashion to the arts and media. “It is a month dedicated to celebrating the uniqueness of Asian culture and taking pride in who we are,” Justin said.

Justin’s mother and her family immigrated to the United States from Vietnam, while his father and his family came from Cambodia in the early 2000s. When Justin was young, he traveled to Vietnam with his grandparents to visit family. Most of his relatives have since moved to the United States, but they have discussed making another trip back in the future.

From a young age, Justin has been fascinated by history, particularly military service and law enforcement. “I also explored the fire service, and now I want to become an EMT or pursue a high-level role in EMS. I joined the Protective Services program so I could start earning those certifications early,” Justin said.

Justin has distinguished himself as a leader in the Protective Services program and currently holds the program’s highest student rank: lieutenant. He previously earned the ranks of sergeant and corporal, making him one of the few students to earn all three major leadership positions within the program.

Through Protective Services, Justin has earned certifications in First Aid, CPR, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations, and FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 coursework. He also successfully completed training through the Montgomery County Fire Academy, earning his nationally recognized Firefighter I certification, and has served as a certified volunteer firefighter with the LaMott Fire Company for the past two years.

Beyond his training and certifications, Justin is committed to serving his community. He has participated in numerous outreach events, including LaMott Community Day, Curtis Park Easter Hunts, Trunk or Treat events, and fire station and fire truck tours. Through his volunteer service, Justin has strengthened his communication, teamwork, and leadership skills. He credits his experience with the fire company for teaching him responsibility, punctuality, and the importance of seeing tasks through to completion. He also values the opportunity to build meaningful relationships within the community and inspire younger generations through education and outreach.

Justin cites his mom as his greatest inspiration. “She is always there when I need her,” Justin said. “She always goes out of her way to help me, and whenever I have a problem, she helps guide me in the right direction.”

After graduating from Cheltenham and EASTERN, Justin plans to attend Temple University to study biology and prepare for a future career in EMS and continue preparing for a career in emergency medical services.
