Student of the Month: November

Lauren Shelton – Veterinary Science

Lauren Shelton, Veterinary Science November Student of the Month, holds Molly, a black mixed breed dog, on an exam table.This award is sponsored each month by EASTERN’s faculty, Joint Operating Committee and the Willow Grove Rotary Club to highlight student excellence, success and service. This month Lauren Shelton was selected.  She is a senior at Hatboro-Horsham High School and is being honored for her work in EASTERN’s Veterinary Science program.

About Lauren:

  • Lauren has a strong interest in zoology and the conservation of wild animals. In tenth grade, Lauren was encouraged by her Hatboro-Horsham High School guidance counselor to visit EASTERN’s Veterinary Science program. Since enrolling in the program, Lauren has an increased focus on her career pathway in zoology and animal conservation.
  • At Hatboro-Horsham High School, Lauren has participated in Field Hockey and Key Club.
  • Lauren currently works as a Resort Staff Member at Holiday House Pet Resort, where she feeds and cares for canine and feline residents.
  • During the summer, she serves as a Barn Staff Member at the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania Camp Wood Haven, where she teaches young campers how to care for horses and how to ride. She also feeds and grooms the horses and provides barn maintenance and cleaning.
  • “I am so proud of Lauren’s growth over the past year,” said Karen McGeehan, EASTERN’s Veterinary Science Instructor. “She is a quiet student who consistently pushes herself out of her comfort zone.  She helps the juniors whenever possible and inspires other students to work hard and be their best.”

Lauren’s accomplishments:

  • As a junior, Lauren received first place in the SkillsUSA local and district competitions for Job Skill Demo, where she demonstrated how to treat an abscess on a horse’s foot. At the SkillsUSA State Competition, Lauren earned fifth place out of ten participants.
  • This year, she was selected by her Veterinary Science Instructor as the 2019 – 2020 SkillsUSA Class Representative.
  • Lauren is a member of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania, where she has served as a member of their advisory committee in 2017 and 2018, and received the Bronze Award in April 2012.
