Student of the Month: November

Elissa Johnson – Construction Technology

Elissa Johnson, November Student of the Month, uses a protractor to draw a right angle on a board.Elissa Johnson is the November 2018 Student of the Month at Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) in Willow Grove. She is in EASTERN’s Construction Technology program and a senior at Cheltenham High School. The Student of the Month Award is sponsored by EASTERN’s faculty, Joint Committee and the Willow Grove Rotary Club to highlight student excellence, success and service. Ten students each year are selected for this honor.

Elissa first learned about the programs at EASTERN through a presentation at Cheltenham High School. As a follow-up to the presentation, she visited both Construction Technology and Protective Services at EASTERN. Elissa knew she did not want a traditional career. She wanted to be different. She chose Construction Technology because she felt as though this skilled trade would assist her in achieving her dream of helping areas in need to rebuild after natural disasters.

At EASTERN, Elissa is a leader in the class and is a student ambassador who helps with recruitment activities. At Cheltenham High School, Elissa is a member of the Black Scholars and the Poetry Club. She also enjoys volunteering at Myers Elementary School where she helps keep the younger students on-task.

“Elissa works hard and shows dedication to the construction trade,” said Jeff Pakula. EASTERN’s Construction Technology Instructor. “She is personable and is always willing to help others in the class. I am proud that she was selected as Student of the Month.”

After graduation from EASTERN and Cheltenham High School, Elissa is interested in going right to work in the field and continue to enhance her construction skills. She is also considering her post-secondary trade school options as well. Eventually, she would like to begin traveling to places such as Puerto Rico and Indonesia to help rebuild.

Construction Technology at EASTERN is the first step for students interested in pursuing a successful career in the carpentry field. For more information, please visit  https://www.eastech.org/easternprograms/con.
