EASTERN Update 04/09/2020

Posted April 9, 2020

Dear Students, Parents, and Community Members,

Earlier today, Governor Wolf announced that all schools will be closed for the remainder of the school year.  EASTERN has been offering distance/online learning to continue providing quality instruction during the school closures.  We will resume instruction after Spring Break on Tuesday, April 14th.  When we return from Spring Break we will work as a team to address alternatives and/or plans for the following activities:

Awards Night:  This is an important night for our students, especially our seniors.  Our Education Foundation sponsors this event and approximately $40,000 worth of awards and scholarships are presented to students.  While we may not be able to host the event in person, we will seek out an alternative way of doing this so our students get recognized for their achievements.

Student Lockers:  We understand that students will need to pick up their personal belongings.  As long as the Stay at Home order is in effect, we are not permitted to distribute these materials as it is considered non-critical.  We will set up plans for doing this safely once the Stay at Home order is lifted.

Spirit Wear:  Orders have arrived and need to be distributed to students.  We will develop a plan for completing this once the Stay at Home order is lifted.

Student Certificates:  Students will still receive an EASTERN certificate, but our team will have to redefine the language and criteria due to the cancellation of the NOCTI assessement.

School to Career Transition:  We will be working with our School-to-Career Coordinator so that students receive support transitioning from school to career.  This includes assisting students with receiving advanced credit at our participating post-secondary institutions.  We have been notified by the Pennsylvania Department of Education that without NOCTI scores, students are unable to take advantage of the statewide articulation agreements.  We have been advised to rely on our own agreements or to work with the post-secondary institutions for alternative ways to qualify.  We are committed to continuing to support our students.  This also includes school to work transitions and assisting students who want to enter directly into the workforce find a position.   None of these services will stop, but we will need to be creative in finding alternatives ways of achieving these goals.

Cosmetology Hours:  Our cosmetology students need 1250 hours for their license.  EASTERN has historically offered summer hours to help students earn the hours they need.  We will be meeting as a team after the break to plan alternatives.

We will provide more updates as we receive them.  For now, enjoy the rest of your break, and know that we are committed to our students and will be working hard to help our students realize their career goals.

For those of you who are celebrating Passover or Easter, we wish you a happy holiday.  Thank you for your patience and support.

Sincerely,

Cathleen E. Plesnarski, Ed.D.
