Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) 1978 Construction Technology/Springfield High School graduate, Bill Steinmetz, has enjoyed a successful career in the construction industry, and has been gainfully employed as a carpenter for Dennis Meyer Inc. for the past 26 years. Two of his sons also attended EASTERN – one completed the Construction Technology program, and one is set to complete the Automotive Technology program in June. Like Steinmetz, both of his sons were very successful in their EASTERN programs.
Through EASTERN, Steinmetz gained the foundation he needed to enter the construction industry. After graduation from EASTERN and Springfield High School, he completed an apprenticeship at the Association of Builders & Contractors (ABC), and received his Journeyman licensure for Carpentry from the State of Pennsylvania.
Steinmetz was aware of the career and technical program offered at EASTERN through his brother who completed the Collision Repair Technology program, and his cousin who completed the Automotive Technology program. Steinmetz knew that he loved to work with his hands and build, so Construction Technology was the path he needed to take.
“EASTERN taught me the skills I needed to be a carpenter and provided me with employment opportunities,” said Steinmetz. “I was thrilled when my sons decided to attend EASTERN. It’s a great school. Both of my sons competed in SkillsUSA competitions and made it to the SkillsUSA State Competition. To any parent thinking about EASTERN — take a tour and talk to other parents and students who have attended,” Steinmetz advises. “The opportunities are endless!”
Construction Technology at EASTERN includes blueprint reading, planning and estimating, along with experience in the installation of formwork, framing, finishing, and stair, rafter and roof construction. Higher education can lead to careers such as architecture, civil or architectural engineering, general contracting, surveying, and construction management.
