Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) 2016 Protective Services/Abington High School graduate, Zachary Liss, has been a member of the McKinley Fire Company for the past three years. McKinley Fire Company is one of five volunteer fire companies in the Abington Township Fire Department. On December 19, 2017 he was bestowed the honor of Firefighter of the Year for demonstrating outstanding service to the fire company and to the community. He also works for the Borough of Rockledge. Liss was already a member of the McKinley Fire Company before enrolling in EASTERN’s Protective Services program as a junior. After visiting EASTERN and seeing the program, he knew that it would increase his firefighting knowledge, and also give him the foundations of criminal justice, EMS and security systems.

“EASTERN gave me a head start in a career I was interested in and once I enrolled I enjoyed being with other students who shared my interests,” said Liss. “If you are thinking of becoming a police officer, firefighter, or EMT – join the Protective Service program at EASTERN. It teaches you a lot about law enforcement, firefighting, or medical services before you even get into an academy. It helps you to narrow down the focus of your career path.” Protective Services at EASTERN provides detailed instruction on leadership, criminal, motor vehicle crash and fire investigation, first responders, security systems, terrorism, firefighting, hazardous materials, and emergency communications. The program establishes a baseline for higher education leading to careers in law enforcement, firefighting, security, corrections and investigation.
