Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) 2011 Welding Technology/Upper Moreland High
School graduate, John Devlin Cerino, is preparing to graduate from the Divers Academy International in
Erial, NJ on January 26, 2012. For over three decades Divers Academy International has served as one
of the nation’s leading commercial diving schools, providing an unsurpassed education in inland and
offshore dive disciplines, including underwater welder training.
While in tenth grade, John had a friend in EASTERN’s Welding program. Since Cerino has always
considered himself a hands-on learner, he decided to give it a try his junior year– and from there found
his career path. Cerino took advantage of the cooperative learning program at EASTERN. Through
cooperative learning, seniors have the opportunity to work several days in their field of study in an
EASTERN-approved establishment, and report back in to class once a week. This program provides
students with the credits they need toward high school graduation, gain real-world work experience, and
earn money. Cerino’s cooperative learning experience parlayed into a full time job after graduation at
Martelli’s Metal Fabrication Inc.
While at EASTERN, Cerino’s Welding Technology Instructor, Gary Devine, told his students about the
opportunity to learn underwater welding at Divers Academy International. Cerino began his full-time
schooling at Divers Academy International in September 2011, and is now focusing on obtaining a job
position in under-water welding. Divers Academy International provides career placement services, but
Cerino noted that there are many job opportunities in the south and is considering moving to Louisiana
or Texas.
“If you are interested in one of EASTERN’s programs –go for it,” said Cerino. “I have always excelled
in a hands-on learning environment. Welding Technology was a great fit for me, and Mr. Devine is an
amazing teacher who really cares about his students and their futures. If you put forth the effort and
commitment, then you can become a skilled welder, and will thrive in a well-paid, high-demand field.”
EASTERN’s Welding Technology program students learn about the properties of different types of
metals and how to join them using state-of-the-art welding equipment. The program prepares students
for success in such career fields as mechanical, aerospace or industrial engineering, physical
metallurgist, business owner, and welding engineer.
