EASTERN Cosmetology Student Organizes Hair Clinic to Benefit Abington Memorial Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

On Saturday, March 19, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Carissa Kemmerling, Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) Cosmetology student and Abington High School senior, is holding a hair clinic at EASTERN’s Terwood Road campus. All proceeds will benefit Abington Memorial Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This event is open to the public for a reasonable cost and a worthy cause. Shampoo and style is $7; scalp treatment is $10; haircut and style is $13; manicures are $6; rejuvenating facial is $7; eyebrow wax is $5; lip wax is $4; tweezing is $5; single process coloring services are $15; double process is $20; permanent wave is $16; partial highlights are $17; full highlights are $25; and cap highlights are $14. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments can be made by emailing Carissa at ckemmerling11@aim.com.

Carissa had posters designed and printed, and promoted her senior project through Facebook. She also informed all of her friends, family and classmates of this event, and asked them to spread the word. She started a preliminary collection at EASTERN on March 16, and will continue to collect through Saturday’s event. If you choose not to purchase a service, but wish to make a donation, all donations can be sent to EASTERN’s Cosmetology Instructor Wendy Leyden at EASTERN at 3075 Terwood Road, Willow Grove, PA 19090.

“My little brother was born four months early and was in Abington’s NICU for four months,” said Carissa. “He was one pound five ounces when he was born and, without the NICU, he wouldn’t have survived. He is four years old now and, although he still has some health issues from being so premature, he is doing extremely well. I am grateful for the amazing doctors and nurses and want to help them to help others.”

Carissa recruited many of her EASTERN Cosmetology classmates to help provide services. Her volunteers include Abington High School seniors Breoni Levert, Heather Palmero, Elisabeth Reichner and Holly Salerno; Archbishop Wood senior Jacqui Colbridge; Cheltenham High School senior Lakeiffa Robinson; Hatboro-Horsham High School seniors Casey Clark, Alexa Franz, Catherine Healy, Sarah Hill and Rose McKenna; Springfield High School senior Annie Crudele; Upper Dublin High School senior Chardonnay Mucker; and Upper Moreland High School seniors Heather Devine and Kelly Dietrich.
