Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) 2007 Computer Network Administration/Upper Moreland High School graduate, Robert Gehring, is Montgomery County Community College’s (MCCC) Assistant Help Desk Coordinator. Robert received his Associates from MCCC in May of 2010, with six credits earned while at EASTERN.
Entering into his senior year at Upper Moreland High School, Robert started thinking about his future, and since he already had a personal interest in computers, he decided to get serious about his career and enroll in the Computer Network Administration program at EASTERN as a one-year senior. In Robert’s current position with MCCC he works with faculty, staff and students on a wide variety of technology issues, including login, classroom technology support, and wireless configuration. He used his education at EASTERN as the first step to a lucrative career.
As a part of the Computer Network Administration program, the instructor, Ms. Karon Crickmore, requires each student go out on an industry visit to job-shadow a network administrator. Robert visited LiquidHub Inc., a global technology consultancy located in the King of Prussia area focused on fueling business transformation in the healthcare, life sciences, financial services, insurance and other progressive market. Due to Robert’s interest and enthusiasm during the visit, he was offered a paid internship working every day after school through the school year and throughout the summer.
“I would advise students considering a career and technical program to take full advantage of EASTERN as a stepping stone,” said Robert. “The Computer Network Administration program prepared me with the technical skills needed for my position at MCCC, and taught me the communication skills that are critical in this field.”
EASTERN’s Computer Network Administration is a two-year half-day program for high school juniors and seniors in which students must pass the Certified Linux Administrator (CLA) exam in the first year and are prepared for two other industry certification exams: Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) and Novell Certified Administrator (NCA). First-year seniors, such as Robert, are welcome providing there is room in the class.
